ac dc transformer.

Postby auditt » Mon Sep 03, 2007 10:39 pm

Hi Everyone. Last bank holiday weekend I made the very costly mistake of conecting my 2005 Hobby 540 ufe exc to a cheap generator. the result as you may well guess was a wardrobe full of accride grey smoke and no 12 volt supply from the 240 volt ac - dc dometic converter. It had got so hot that it had melted the insulating wax off the transformer which had dripped on to the base of the wardrobe.
All of the red led lights still illuminate on the unit and my battery will still power all of the lights and pumps e.t.c. but the transformer is dead. I supose was lucky that it did not catch fire as I was parked very close to lots of £100.0000 motorhomes!
The cost of a replacement ac -dc converter from Ambergate is about £250, does enyone no if I can obtain a pre used one from a breakers yard or is there an ac - dc converter available from other manufactures that would do the same job.
Would it be best to just buy a new Dometic and put it down to expreince!
Helpfull advice appriciated
Regards Paul.

Right Paul,

You don't really need to use the Dometic unit in the way that Hobby intended and can in fact remove the AC mains input from it.

See my post here detailing the method that I used:

The look at Page 3 of the Gallery for illustrations named "Hobby Electrics 2005".

Mine has been working this way since May 2005 without problem.

Save yourself £250.00 but never run on a cheap generator, mine runs from a Honda EU2.0i.

Good luck,
Roy
