Hitch weight and overall weight

Postby bockhamptoners » Sun Feb 24, 2008 6:20 pm

I just bought a hitch weight guage and the man in the shop said most caravans should have about 75g on the front, but I thought I'd seen a post which said you should calculate the nose weight as 7% of the overall weight......as I don't know the overall weight i wasn't sure this would get me anywhere....any advice?

As said, I don't know the overall weight, in fact I'm not sure how much my 2000 540UK weights and how much I'm allowed to put in it....but either way I have no-way that I can see to 'weight' or 'check' it....... has anyone clever invented a pad or something that you drive onto to get the weight of one one wheel and its load share, then do the other one and nose wheel and hey presto you have the total weight?

Reich Weight Control circa £99.00 does what you want or you could just take the 540 to a public weighbridge.

The noseweight is dictated by the lower of:

a) the car manufacturers published noseweight.

b) the towbar published noseweight.

c) the hitch published nose weight ( this is usually c. 100kg).

For my Amazon a) = 150kg, b) = 80kg and c) = 100kg.

I usually aim for beteen 60 and 75kg.
