Winter preperation a different story...

Postby fokion » Mon Oct 10, 2005 9:11 am

As I have told you :D my van is permanently sitted at a near the sea camping at Sounio.
Since I am planing of using it also in the winter as much as possible, instead of the fabric drape under the van to the side of the awning, I used plywood(??) instead. Havent figured out yet a more nice fix on the upper part, so its gaffer tape at the moment, Any ideas welcome!!!

At the moment, and with this setup, I can very easyly remove them incase I want to move the van

Buy some of the material tape used to fit the awning to the awning rail. This can be stapled to the ply and then it can be slid into place in the lower rail like the original material version. Velcro hook & loop tape can be used to hold the wheel cover in place. I see you have plastic on the hitch. This will "sweat" and cause corrosion or rust on the metal parts. You are better with a loose cover that allows the air to circulate. I used to use a large plastic rubbish bin upside down with slots and holes cut in it to fit over the hitch but standing clear of the ground.

An other winter question. Should I do something with my gas bottle? It will be used mainly for heeting the van at the weekends. Its located in the boot. Should I cover it with some sort of blanket?

If it is propane no. If it is butane change it for propane! Covering a gas bottle will achieves nothing. Below 5 degrees C butane will not vaporise whereas propane will vaporise down to - 40C.

As beejay indicates, NO

Heat from the environment needs to get into the 'gas' bottle to help vapourize the gas from the liquid phase. Covering the gas bottles actually reduces this vapourization; not a good idea!

With propane gas you'll probably never notice it, but with butane at cold temperatures, you certainly will.

Here's a photo of a propane cylinder (French Twiny) Image in which the evaporating propane (for the water heater and blown air heating) has cooled the liquid propane and the cylinder, to such an extent that frost (i.e < 0°C) has formed on the outside of the cylinder, to the level where the liquid propane is.
Cheers, Doc.

Sort the beer out first!

Postby candlefish » Wed Oct 12, 2005 10:17 pm

by the way, you should never store beer upside down. See Heineken box above. Beer stored this way should be opened and drunk quickly, just to check that is is still ok. :D

I have heard many horror stories about this. My mate had a bad beer the other night. He thought it was the 12th one, but it might have been the 13th one. He was very ill the next day!

Cheers, or "Bottoms up"

Not the regulator just the fitting to the bottle, the devices will work on either.

Tell me is it true that like beer that has been stored upside down that Ouzo needs to be drunk once the bottle has been opened otherwise it evaporates :?:

For the GAS - I will take pictures and look at the bottle and come back to you.. since I dont quite understand wat you mean

For the ouzo :D :D :D - Idealy is that you empty    the bottle when you oppen it not only it evaporates ( a good ouzo is nearly flamable!!!!!) byt it also if you drink it after a few days - depends on how you store it - it gets too sweet and it gives you a hangover more easily!!!!!!

The Butane hasa fitting that pushes on and a clip secures it Propane has a screw thread and the connector is tightened with a wrench. Thank you for confirming my theory about the Ouzo, it is similar with good scotch whiskey only thing that is different is if you don't finish the bottle someone else will :!: and it doesn't matter when the bottle is finished the head aches just the same

It is tightened anti-clock wise if it helps

Doc.
Why are you using a convertor between the "twinny" bottle and reg? I use "twinnys" but also use the regulator the clips directly to the bottle. The reason you have "frost" is because the take off rate is too high. The twinny reg will give 1500 kg/hour but I can't read the take off rate on your reg!! This summer I bought, on offer, two twinnys with a regulator for €12 (£8) the two, from a French supermarket and my previous ones were only about £8 each. Do Calor rip us off???? B & Q sell "patio gas" in French bottles filled by Calor at £40 bottle + gas or "only" £14 for a refill of 5 kg.
