12v system for a 2005 model van

Postby chris123456 » Wed Jun 07, 2006 10:53 pm

Having just purchased my 2nd Hobby 495UK in Germany I intended to duplicate the 12v system installed on 2004 model I previously owned. Unfortunately the electrical system has changed and any advice on an appropriate battery charger & wiring diagram would be appreciated. In particular am I correct in assuming that the mains input into the Dometic transformer should be removed leaving the 12 volt system to rely upon the supply from the charger?

I can only tell you how I did mine.
I have tried to put two pictures into the Gallery but I cannot see them even though it indicates that they are there.
If you cannot see them, PM your E-mail address to me and I will send them that way.
One of the pictures is clean and the other is marked up.

Unplug the mains input lead from the right hand unit, this is no longer required.
Ident 1 shows where to connect the L,N and E for the charger/psu.
Ident 2 shows the two wires that must be removed from “BATT+â€

Nice post Roy.
:) I've been thinking of undertaking this upgrade to the 2001 495 UK that we have just bought. You have just helped me make up my mind. Any pointers on best battery box location ?

Mine is a 540WLU and I have sited the battery and charger under the off-side bed just behind the axle.
The beauty of a 3 or 4 step charger is that you do not need to worry about hydrogen release, so no need to vent to the outside world.
For your 2001, 495 you need to search for Doc's excellent instructions as they are different to the 2005.
I'm sure that Doc won't mind but here are his pics.

Thanks for the prompt advice Roy, unfortunaly due to broadband connection problems i've not really been able to see your advice until now. Having fitted a Truma mover last weekend this weekends task will be to sort out the battery charging otherwise i'll be stuck with with the caravan being located alongside my house!

As I am just about to get a Hobby this is an upgrade that I will definitely be doing over the winter.

Never having had a caravan before, a lot of the terminology etc is alien to me. I will just need to wait and see what I get and then try to align the pictures with what I see in front of me.

Hopefully it won't look too bad :)
