The GVW is the weight given on the VIN plate and is the weight above which the vehicle becoms illegal and includes any of the items you mention.

The GVW of my Amazon is 3260Kg from memory, hence my caravan being the 540 model.

Unless the GVW stamped on your VIN plate is 3501 KGs or greater your rig would be illegal.

I am completely confused at the moment, on the width thing, after reading so much..... I have a 2.5m(width) hobby van I tow with a Chevy Suburban, which can tow 3.5 tonnes, is this legal or illegal?

cheers
April

Depends on which model Suburban you have - the half ton or three quarter ton and whether it's 4x2 or 4x4?

Half ton 4x2 has a GVW of approx. 3,265 Kg
Half ton 4x4 has a GVW of approx. 3,356 Kg - neither is legal for towing 2.5m wide in the UK

Three quarter ton 4x2 & 4x4 has a GVW of approx. 3,900 Kg
Three quarter ton 4x4 has a GVW of approx. 3,900 Kg - both would be OK for towing 2.5m wide in the UK IF the manufacturers plate on the vehicle still gives either the 8,600 lb or 3,900 Kg figure.
If it's been changed by VOSA at time of import to 3,500 Kg - you are still stuffed I'm afraid. We're lucky in that our F-250 is still plated at 3,999 Kg.
