Hi jj'smum, of the current range all Hobbies above the 540 range are 2.5 metres wide. 540 and below vary up to 2.3 metres.

We have just bought a Prestige 660 UK Special, we drive a Discovery have we made a mistake. We do intend to have the caravan sited, do we need a bigger vehicle to tow it to the site. We are delighted with the van but the 660 never seems to be listed much. Dont have a clue yet how wide it is it was made in 2005, anybody have any idea. Thanks

The Disco can't tow 2.5m wide vans, well actually it physically can but legally is not allowed to in the UK, at least not under current legislation.

If you intend to have it sited semi-permanently then the best solution is, as you say, get a bigger tow vehicle either temporarily or use a caravan moving agency - there are several about.

But whatever anyone else may claim is OK, we have all been advised that the legal situation is "Gross Weight" of towing vehicle must be greater than 3500 kg (not equal to) in order to tow a trailer/caravan wider than 2.3 metres. And about the insurance issues, if you tow with an illegal vehicle then both your car and your caravan are breaking the road traffic regulations because your car insurance will be null and void and therefore so will your 3rd party cover of the trailer.

However, for a wide caravan that is on site, your caravan insurance IS OK for 3rd party liability and for contents and damage and theft too. Just don't tow it on the public roads with a car or 4x4 or van that is only plated up to 3500 kg Gross Vehicle Weight - it must be legally capable of being loaded to more than 3500kg.
