Help needed with new (older) caravan!!

Postby andirsv » Thu May 06, 2010 7:43 am

Hi guys,

Well, I am really annoyed with myself today as we've been looking for a cheap starter caravan to try it out and finally bought one yesterday. I made the mistake of liking the sellers (a middle aged couple) who showed us around, made us a cuppa in the caravan (I stupidly informed them this would be our first van!!).

Everything was really clean and tidy, and everything works electrically and gas powered. They had mirrors on the walls, really homely little van (Lunar Club-man 360/2 - 1992 apparently).

So we did the deal without a huge amount of investigating (again really annoyed with myself as have read up on what to look for!).

On arrival back at home, we started to put some of our things in the van to get away this weekend to find that at the entrance door, the floor felt "spongy"........lifted the carpet to reveal rotten flooring and still really damp!! So, this got us worried and we thoroughly checked the rest of the van, it had soft walls at the rear corners but thankfully not every wall!! The doorway is the worst affected area and am drying it now now with electric heaters with the hope it will dry it enough to really see what's what.

My real question is, (I am a relatively handy guy) is this too big a project for me to do and is it financially viable?? Do they wall panels and flooring NEED to be replaced or can they be mended?? I have heard that caravan engineers are expensive, can anyone elaborate on the kind of price i could expect to pay for getting it fixed?? Also, can anyone recommend a good company in or near West Lothian to get a price from?? So angry with myself (and the couple, who absolutely HAD US!!)

Thanks for any help/advice...........Andi
