I decided to replace a couple of dingy incandescent lights with more efficient LEDs.
A boating friend suggested these:-

I just fitted two of the cool white versions. They are much brighter than the old
lights and draw only one eighth of the current from the battery. With both lights on
that's a massive saving of almost 5 Amps.
LED lights are certainly worth considering if battery life is a problem.
