Help re 8' wide Hobby Insurance

Postby warwij1 » Fri Mar 10, 2006 4:13 pm

Hi there - Just joined this week as I will be picking up an 8ft wide Hobby 560 (single axle) at the weekend. I am now trying to get insurance and appear to be having big problems as the van is so wide. The caravan club etc refuse cover because of this. can anyone help ?

Cheers

Not very helpful I'm afraid, but perhaps you should have asked before you bought it.
There are insurers that will cover the 560 if you permanently site it or if you tow it with a vehicle exceeding 3500 kg gross weight.
Oh, and welcome by the way.
Hobby 540WLU, 2005.
Knaus 570TL Eurostar, 1995, permanently sited in France.
Toyota Landcruiser Amazon 4.2 VX, 2003.
Toyota Yaris, 1.4 Turbodiesel, 2007

cheers for the info, durr should have checked.

I do intend to site the van and leave it (in this country) for regular use - do you know of any company that would cover it if its not to be towed around ??

cheers

Hi John & Welcome

We insured our 720 as a tourer in June , the only one that would insure us was the Co-op (CIS)

Hope this helps.

Hi John,
We've got our 720 insured with Saga. There are no conditions about permanently siting it (although we have sited ours).

Saga do not have to ASK if the van is permanently sited. It is up to the proposer to declare any facts that may be relevant to the insurance. Any insurance company can insure any van and assume that relevant laws will be obeyed. It is when the van is taken on the road in an illegal manner, i.e. overwide for the towing vehicle, that the problems may arise. Many insurance companies DO ask what the width and length of the van is, thereby getting the insured to commit those facts to the policy, but they are not necessary and failure to disclose will leave a reason to refuse a claim. All insurance is based on "good faith". Not disclosing relevant facts (and complying with the law IS relevant) will almost certainly lead to serious problems in the event of a claim. In the event of a road accident involving an uninsured car & caravan ( because of illegal use) you could be personally liable for any damages to third parties.

Another duplicated entry. Deleted by editing as there appears to be no other way of deleting a posting.

This is the third time my posts have been duplicated. It is not me sending twice but appears to be a fault in the system. Sorry.

Thanks everyone for the responses so far.

I got a quote from CIS that doesnt look too bad. Picked the van up yesterday, lucky as today would be under a lovely white blanket of snow.

now getting the hang of electrics and when the snow melts will be giving it a damn good wash.
no doubt i will be posting again sometime soon.

cheers
