New or not so new?

Postby alistairr » Mon Aug 08, 2005 7:07 pm

Hi All,

While not exactly new to caravanning, it has been a few years since I hitched up my new German van onto the back of my British Forces registered car and drove of to many exciting places. The van was a Wieppert tourer, which was nicked while in a major UK dealer for a service! Anyway, to cut a long story short, my new partner and I are starting again and as I have long been convinced of the quality of build over inferior British vans, this time it is a Hobby, probably one of the various flavours of 540. The problem is whether to buy new or used, UK or buy abroad. I would like a shower although not essential, and a fixed double bed, so that I can hide away for a kip. Your view on models would be appreciated.

I hear many stories about electrics, but as I had a double of everything with two pin plugs fitted, it was never an issue, either overseas or the UK. I did have a very clever device, which I think was made by a company called labcraft, which was a clever little plastic box that contained a leisure battery which was charged while running and also while on mains. It saw to all our 12v needs! Anyone know if these are still available? No advice will go unheeded and all will be appreciated. Oh... and hello to you all!

12 electrics...you will soon realise that non uk spec vans dont have the 12v battery and charging system uk vans have. No real problem..as uk dealer can fit for about £280 inc. Only really required if using a site with no electricity..also good for a power cut. See the DOC for a wiring diagram.
You mention the Labcraft charger . it will be the Labcraft TP2 which is no longer made although varying examples appear on ebay.
You could use the said Labcraft charger but things have moved on since so a leisure battery and charger would be more fitting with the times.
Also see the water inlet issues etc..again not a problem..but you could fit a whale pump or similar if you want to use an aquaroll etc.

Finally welcome...Im anewby myself and ex BFG...77 onwards EX REME.
